We get this request a lot: “Can you just put a new condenser on my old air handler?”

Short answer: usually no — and here’s why it ends up costing more.

•  Mismatched capacity and metering devices destroy efficiency and comfort

•  Old coils are often restricted or contaminated

•  Warranty on the new outdoor unit can be voided or limited

•  You’re still stuck with the weak link (the indoor side and ducts)

A proper system replacement (matched outdoor + indoor, new lineset or properly flushed/prepared lines, sealed plenums, correct airflow) is the only way to actually get the SEER and humidity control you’re paying for. We see the difference every summer when the half-done jobs start failing or running nonstop.

If someone quotes you a “condenser only” price that looks too good, ask what the real system efficiency will be and who stands behind the whole thing when it underperforms.
